Home to the famous ‘Old Faithful’ geyser, Yellowstone National Park is primarily located in Wyoming’s northwest corner. Granted, the nearest town is West, Montana, which he names Yellowstone, but the town of Derby, Montana, where the show takes place, is 600 kilometers (377 miles) away from the park.
However, many of the buildings you see on screen are as realistic as possible. One of his attractions on the show is the political drama, with several storylines his threads taking place in or around the Montana governor’s office. That building, which also serves as the filming location for all of the frequent courtroom scenes in Season 4, is the Montana State Capitol in Helena, Montana.
Dutton’s youngest son, Case (Luke Grimes), is often seen in the offices of the Montana Livestock Association. The exterior of that building was filmed in Hamilton, Montana. Combined with shots of other towns in different states to create the illusion of a complete small town in Montana.
The exciting chase sequence in the season 4 premiere spills onto the country roads of Missoula, Montana, and is quite accurate in that it reflects the show’s fictional geography. Keith’s childhood home and downtown office, like all three locations, are very close together in both show and reality. Derby, Hamilton and Missoula are within an hour’s drive of each other.
Most of the breathtaking landscapes featured in the series are Bitterroot Valley The part of the Rocky Mountains that runs around Derby, especially along the border between Montana and Idaho.symbolic Chief Joseph Ranch In Derby, Montana, it doubles as the fictional Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, whose scope and history reflect the legacy of the fictional Dutton family of its founders. Taylor Sheridan has also been built over the years.
Built between 1914 and 1917, this historic building is the quintessential backdrop for the series, with all the impressive stables, farmhouses and ranches seen in the show. Chief Joseph Ranch actually rents out a few rooms during his off season when the show isn’t filming, but don’t expect the interior to match Dutton Ranch perfectly. All of his indoor shots at his Yellowstone ranch in his first three seasons were shot on a soundstage.
