A new children’s book from the University of Guam Press offers young readers a chance to experience the world of traditional CHamoru music.
UOG Press publishes I Lalai i Bilembaotuyan, written by Catherine Payne and John Payne II and illustrated by local artist Veronica Cruz.
This book introduces the reader to Lålai, a CHamoru girl who learns how to play bilembaotuyan from Tåtan Bihu. Historically found in Guam, this instrument can be played by striking with a striking stick.
The book focuses on the importance of cross-generational knowledge and respect for elders, with Rollei sharing the musical insights he learned from Tatan Biff with his younger cousins.
The book is also concerned with coping with grief and helps young readers build a sense of their own strength and resilience.

Community members and families can enjoy readings by the authors during the book launch on Saturday, September 17, from 10 am to noon at the Nieves M. Flores Memorial Library in Hagåtña.
