Everyone can use tips and tricks to save money these days.
We previously shared energy saving tips from the Guam Power Authority on the PDN Ayuda Line. I also got more information from “Do Just One Thing”, a syndication feature written by Danny Seo. His column features creative ways to live simply and affordably while doing something good for the environment.
The following “do only one thing” tips focus on how you can save money by optimizing the energy efficiency of your appliances.
stock that fridge
Did you know that a full freezer is the most energy efficient kind? Residual cold air in frozen food keeps temperatures low. That means your freezer needs less energy to keep it cold.
If your freezer isn’t full of food, consider storing ice packs to keep it cold. The ice packs in your meal delivery kit are good for storage. They stay frozen and ready to use when needed.
Simply filling a plastic container with water and freezing it will also work.
Kill the use of “vampires”
Microwaves are an energy-efficient way to reheat leftovers and make popcorn at home. But did you know that microwave ovens are only used for about 70 hours a year on average to heat food?
That’s only about 1% of the year, but the other 99% of the time it draws power from the grid to light up the display and keep it ready at the push of a button.
In fact, this “vampire”‘s power usage is about the same as having a lamp on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you don’t use the microwave, just unplug it. It also helps you regain your savings and extend the life of your appliances.
“Fast” doesn’t always mean efficient
Dishwashers are designed to be as water-saving and energy-efficient as possible, making them a greener choice than hand washing.
It may seem like you can save energy by choosing ‘quick’ or ‘1 hour mode’ for your dishwasher, but it’s actually the opposite. Just as driving a car slowly saves fuel, a dishwasher gains energy efficiency by extending its cycle time, reducing both electricity and water usage.
A quick wash means your machine needs to use more resources to get the same performance. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know. If you have any advice, comments or questions, please email us at life@guampdn.com or DM us on Facebook or Instagram at @guampdn.
