What is road schooling?
Road schooling is on the rise, especially since the pandemic has led many parents to adopt homeschooling.
While some parents certainly didn’t enjoy homeschooling their children, others found it worked. , you can homeschool your children.
Road schooling is a great way to bring your lessons to life by incorporating travel into your lesson plans. For example, students can not only read about the Civil War, but also visit Civil War sites and museums.

Essential road school classroom supplies
If this is your first time “road schooling”, you may not know exactly what you need. After all, when traveling in an RV, you don’t want to overpack. But you also want to make sure your kids get what they need to succeed.
Here are some essentials your child will need to get ready for school on the go. Let’s break it down for you…
Basic supplies
The first thing you need is a cache of basic school supplies. Some great items are:
- pencil
- pen
- marker
- crayon
- scissors
- Seaweed
- tape
- ruler
- calculator
- Paper – white and lined
These are items found in regular classrooms from grade school through high school. You can find ready-made back-to-school supply kits on Amazon that include these basics.
PC & printer
Another consideration in this era is the use of laptops (and/or) digital technology such as tablets and printers.
Computers are a must if students need to stream their schoolwork digitally or attend a virtual school. Many schools use affordable Chromebooks as school laptops, so they’re great for virtual use as well.
Even in a tight-spaced RV, it’s handy to have a printer close at hand. Many people bring a lightweight, portable printer with them when traveling in their RV. There are great options that make learning on the go much easier.
If your child needs to participate in a live session, you should also make sure they have internet access. Thankfully, SpaceX Starlink makes this a lot easier these days.

Finding information using digital devices is very convenient and commonplace, but don’t leave your books behind.
It is useful for children to read texts from books. You don’t have to provide information all the time. In fact, you should have a variety of books on hand for your children.
The following types of books are important:
- Workbooks: Having some curriculum in workbooks is good for children. You can find all different kinds of workbooks online for almost every subject and age group.
- Picture book reading: It’s nice to have a lot of books that children can enjoy reading. You can get your favorite genre of books online. Or, go to the library and let them choose, depending on how long they will stay in one place. Or find a small free library and trade books.
- Location Field Guides: Is there a better time to read a field guide to your child than while traveling?

Art supplies
Traveling is a great opportunity to develop your child’s creativity.
For example, you can help children keep a nature diary where they can write and chart their outdoor adventures.
To be creative, kids need some basic supplies. Consider getting:
- journal or sketchbook
- colored pencils or other art supplies
- paint or watercolor
- sketch set
As your child becomes more creative, they may ask you for different tools to create their work. It can also change over time as your kids grow up or move to a new place.

Road School Storage Solution
We all know RV space is limited. Road school supplies are important, but smart storage solutions are essential to staying sane.
I have outlined some creative ways to store your child’s school items.
under bed storage solution
If you have space under your RV bed, one great way to store school supplies is in an under-bed container. Your child can store items in the container and pull them out when it’s time for school. Then clean up easily at the end of the day.
wall solution
Utilize wall space, or the area under your RV’s door window to store items.
Secure the organizer to any open space. Children can store items when not in use.
over door hanging solution
There are also door hanging solutions that are very lightweight and easy to use.
It has slots for easy storage of notebooks, reading books and other supplies when not in use.

Another idea is to install drawer storage under the kitchen table.
These are great places to store scissors, rulers, glue, and pencils when not in use.

Now let’s talk about desks. A variety of desk solutions are available for those traveling in an RV.
First, you need to decide where you think your kids will get most of their work done. Do they do it indoors or outdoors?
Another factor is the age of your child. This will determine where you are most comfortable to complete your work.
