Juliette Rivera She was only 25 years old when she was killed with a blow to the head near the unincorporated South Coast area of San Mateo County, California. More than 30 years later, law enforcement claims they have identified her killer.
But in an unsolved murder case, justice will be elusive.
Suspect, man under pseudonym John Paulpassed away in January of this year. But the alleged “John Paul” wasn’t a man named “John” or “Paul.” According to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the killer assumed his brother’s name and lived a temporary life for decades to avoid detection.
It was mid-July 1992 when farmers made a tragic discovery near an irrigation pond. Rivera’s body was decomposing. She had been reported missing ten days earlier.
An autopsy indicates that the victim died from blunt force trauma from a flat object to the back and left side of the skull.
“Here at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, a cold case does not mean a closed case. Eamon Allen told Law&Crime. “We investigate all cases thoroughly.”
And the investigator was not at all empty-handed. They had suspects and names: Abraham RivieraAccording to SMSCO, he was 50 years old at the time and was an acquaintance of the victim.
The Alameda Police Department even had a Riviera suspect at one point. According to the sheriff’s office, local police ultimately decided they didn’t like what he said because there were so many inconsistencies. A conclusion was reached and an arrest warrant was issued to the Riviera on August 7, 1992.
But by the time he was indicted, a man passing by Gregory Mark Riviera It was long gone. Detectives found his apartment in Alameda, California abandoned.
The murder and subsequent escape was featured in an episode of America’s Most Wanted Shortly thereafter.

Gregory Mark Riviera has a background in the US Army. He has experience as an auto mechanic. He loves to talk about his time in Hawaii, and is said to be someone who loves the Bay Area and likes attending social events and local bars.
However, it was the death of a rogue who called himself “John Paul” that put an end to the affair. The Merced County Coroner’s Office examined the deceased’s fingerprints to identify his next of kin. Results showed that those fingerprints were indeed from the Riviera. SMSCO was contacted in May of this year.
according to Half Moon Bay Reviewthe coroner’s office and detectives determine there is a man who is later called John Paul – and he is still alive. The person was identified as the brother of the deceased presumed killer. Authorities eventually spoke with the man’s daughter and said her father and uncle often swap identities to keep law enforcement guessing, the newspaper said.
SMSCO said in a statement obtained by online news site Patch.com, “Based on this investigation, which identified the suspected Abraham Rivera aka Gregory Mark Riviera aka John Paul, who was finally found and is now deceased. and the case has been closed,” he said.
