farm work day
Bayside Park Farm, located at 930 Old Arcata Road, Arcata, offers drop-in volunteers on Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Show up 15 minutes early to sign the paperwork.
Projects may include planting, weeding, and harvesting. No experience required, families welcome (no pets allowed).
Appropriate clothing includes closed-toe shoes, long pants, sleeves and a sun hat. Please bring a water bottle and snacks. Pack garbage and recyclable items. COVID-19 safety protocols must be followed.
Drop-in volunteers are for individuals, families, or friends in groups of 5 or less. For larger groups, please contact the local farmer to ensure additional staff are available on weekdays.
marshfield trip
The Audubon Society of Redwood Areas will be offering free guided excursions at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:00 am.
Participants should bring their binoculars and meet Trip Leader Rob Fowler at the end of South I Street (Lake Crop) in Arcata to enjoy stunning views of Humboldt Bay, easy walking trails and a wide variety of birdlife.
Bird watching tour
The Redwood Area Audubon Society offers free guided birdwatching tours along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sundays from 9am to 11am with leader Ralph Butcher.
This relatively urban trail offers the possibility of observing species richness and diversity compared to more remote locations. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Email Ralph Bucher to sign up for this field trip at thebook@reinet.com.

Chinn discusses his recent book Dancing in their Light: A Daughter’s Unfinished Memoir. The book tells the story of the “proud daughter” of immigrant parents growing up, performing at her family’s famous Polynesian nightclubs, and the legacy her family left behind. Many contributions to the American cultural and international scientific landscape.

The City of Arcata will host a free “Bike Rodeo” on August 28 from 12pm to 4pm at Carlson Park in Valley West on Mad River Parkway E in Arcata.
