BERLIN (AP) — A German court has dismissed a lawsuit from an environmental group seeking to ban automaker Mercedes-Benz from selling cars with greenhouse-gas-emitting combustion engines after 2030. .
The state court in Stuttgart, where the Mercedes-Benz Group is based, said on Tuesday it was up to parliamentarians to decide what measures should be taken against climate change, German news agency dpa said. reported that such decisions cannot be preempted by individual cases in civil court.
The Deutsche Umwelthilfe Group had asked Mercedes-Benz to order from the end of October 2030 not to sell vehicles with emission-causing internal combustion engines. In total he emits over 516 million tons of carbon dioxide.
Deutsche Umwelthilfe said it planned to appeal to the Higher District Court, arguing that the politician’s inaction had forced legal action.
Mercedes-Benz welcomed the verdict. Protecting the climate is arguably one of the greatest challenges in human history and the company has lived up to its responsibilities and has come a long way towards climate neutrality.
