Tucson, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Friday is Mexico’s Independence Day and the second day of Hispanic Heritage Month.
From September 15th to October 15th, events will be held throughout Tucson to celebrate and celebrate Hispanic culture.
On Friday, the country’s oldest continuously operating Mexican restaurant celebrated its grand centennial anniversary.
“I think this is an amazing testament to the people who loved what they did. My great Tia Monica and my mother Carlotta basically each ran this company for the last 50 years. Ray Flores, CEO of Si Charro, said:
This is a major milestone that many companies have never seen before. Tía Mónica of Flores started his catering business in 1922, invented chimichanga and made el his charo famous, making it a memorable trip to this day.
There were also some bumps on the road along the way.
“The biggest challenge for me was going through COVID as a restaurant. I can’t imagine what she went through. I think COVID has been an absolutely terrifying time for our family business these days,” Flores said.
Flores said El Charro has largely recovered from the pandemic and is celebrating its 100th anniversary thanks to a dedicated staff and the Tucson community. ”This is an overarching campaign that really has a lot of overarching events. Tucson hosts more than 30 events a month to celebrate Hispanic heritage,” explains Megan Evans, communications director at Visit Tucson.
This is the first year of Viva Tucson and focuses on Tucson’s deep Hispanic heritage. From mariachis to forlorico his dancers to classic Mexican food, you’ll find a list of everything you can celebrate throughout the month.
“The importance of hosting an event like Viva Tucson is that it really showcases what is integral to our identity here. It’s part food, it’s part art and culture, it’s part architecture,” Evans said.
