NEW CONDORD — Fort Frye controlled the tempo and grinded its way to a season-opening 33-6 win over John Glenn Friday.
The Division VI Cadets outgained the Division IV Muskies 267-148, led by a ground attack that chewed up 160 yards on 44 carries.
Owen Brown carried 11 times for 45 yards while Austin Powell added 41 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Clayton Miller ran seven times for 32 yards and was 5 for 7 passing for 107 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Brown and a 17-yard TD strike to Powell. Powell also had a 3-yard touchdown run.
Zaiden Huck opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter, but the Muskies answered with a touchdown on the ensuing drive to take a 6-3 lead. Fort Frye followed with 30 unanswered points, including a 79-yard kick return to the house by Owen Brown to open the second half.
Fort Frye’s defense limited John Glenn to 73 rushing yards and 75 passing yards and forced three turnovers — two interceptions by Braxton Brown and another by Keegan Strode.
The Cadets are back on the road next Saturday when they travel to Bellaire.
Waterford 18, Crooksville 6
CROOKSVILLE — Despite a penalty-filled night for Waterford, the Wildcat defense came out of the gate in its season-opener and kept Crooksville’s offense in check in an 18-6 win over the Ceramics Friday night.
The Wildcats scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters and built an 18-0 lead after Dylan Taylor’s 10-yard touchdown run.
Crooksville, which managed just 135 yards of total offense, including a minus-9 yards in the passing department, spoiled the shutout bid with a 2-yard rushing touchdown later in the third quarter.
Waterford quarterback Jake Pantelidis opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown completion to Lane Cline in the opening quarter. Just as they would on their final two touchdowns, the Wildcats failed on the conversion.
Pantelidis finished the game completing 8-of-16 pass attempts for 81 yards. Teammate Mason Heiss hauled in five receptions for 43 yards, while Cline caught three passes for 45 yards.
Waterford closed out its first half scoring with Dylan Taylor breaking through for a 1-yard TD run. Taylor led all Waterford ballcarrier with 61 yards on seven carries, while Cline addd 46 yards on nine attempts.
Waterford managed to improve to 1-0 despite being flagged 19 times for 173 yards.
