Bryan, TX (KBTX) – Navigating skin care can be difficult when it comes to knowing your skin type and the products to use. Her Etta Whitely, beauty expert and founder of the Finetta Beauty & Barber Academy, joined her BVTM on Friday to share basic tips anyone can use.
According to Whitley, your skin type can usually be spotted about 30 minutes after you cleanse your skin. If you have both, it’s considered “combination.” Regardless of your skin type, experts suggest using products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
When removing the cleaner, Whitley advises using cold water and dabbing dry rather than wiping your face. Afterwards, Whitley recommends using a moisturizer and toner, which she says is great for reducing inflammation around her eyes.
“I always tell my students that they are thinking about ‘CMT,'” Whitley said. “Cleansing, moisturizing, tone up.”
Experts believe that a skin care routine should start in middle school.
For those looking to add makeup after their skin routine, Whitley believes it doesn’t take long to enhance your natural beauty. If you want to take things up a notch, you can add foundation and lashes. Finding the right foundation can be tricky, but Whitley said it’s important to find one that’s close to your natural skin tone.
“You don’t want to change your complexion, you want to improve it,” Whitley said. “That’s what makeup is really about: to enhance what you already have.”

“Before we start this, we need to lay the groundwork,” said Whitley. “You need a moisturizing shampoo and a good conditioner. And if you have color-treated hair, you need a shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair.”
