In addition to providing must-have high-fashion looks, the catwalk collection continues to inspire us with beauty every season.
It’s usually a mix of understated and avant-garde, and the Fall/Winter 2022 runways were no exception. Retro-inspired hair, glittery adornments, and classic looks have been given new life.
As you prepare to refresh your wardrobe for fall/winter, here are the backstage beauty trends that are sweeping the season…
1. Red Lips Reborn
In recent years, makeup artists have moved from one-size-fits-all trends to a more customized approach, and how you rock your red lips this season is up to you.
Designers such as Molly Goddard, Tory Burch, and Feben advocated cool-toned matte textures.
While scarlet sheen dominated the Miu Miu and Sportmax, Vivienne Westwood’s model had a satin-finished pout somewhere in between.
2. Hair band
There’s only one way to top off your look this season. It’s the use of headbands.
From David Koma’s ’90s-style zig-zag comb bands and Roksanda’s skinny, sporty styles to Eudon Choi’s chunky brightly colored Alice bands and Zimmerman’s beaded crowns, these accessories will elevate any look.
3. Party Punk
From New York to Paris, sexy, smoky and dramatic black-eyed looks were popular, with going glam being the main inspiration backstage.
Jason Wu and Roberto Cavalli had XXL-rated cat movies, and Bora Aksu and Saint Laurent had dirty Cole whipping, focusing more on punky aesthetics than accuracy.
4. 90s hair
Fashion can’t quite understand the 2000s, but hairstylists are still obsessed with the 1990s: the decade of minimalism.
Nensi Dojaka’s slick-back locks, Giambattista Valli’s damp bob, and Preen’s spiky chignon saw ’90s inspiration.
5. Highlighter eye
The splash of color was brought by the acidic eyeshadow. Highlighter Yellow and Lime Green at Mark Fast, Fuchsia Wing at Valentino, and Vibrant Violet at Saint Laurent.
How can this look work for winter? Team Cream eye color with a clean, matte base and nude lip.
6. Bleached brows
Lila Moss (daughter of legendary catwalker Kate) capped Richard Quinn’s show in an all-white bridal look.
One of this season’s bolder trends, it’s also seen at Preen, Versace and Burberry. Peroxide Her blonde brows aren’t for everyone, but they help accentuate those smoky eyes.
7. Face jewelry
It’s not uncommon for fall/winter catwalks to be sprinkled with glitter (it’s this season, after all), but this time metallic makeup was taken to the next level with full-face jewelry.
At Givenchy, a pair of gemstones dotted the cheeks of the forehead, at Simone Rocha, the eyes were encrusted with crystals, and at Burberry, the bespoke bejeweled design even included the brand’s logo.
Sprinkle some stick-on gems into your party season eye look, from the runway to real life.
